Day 2Discover Kathmandu

Take a day to enjoy the beautiful atmosphere of Kathmandu. This breathtaking capital has boomed in recent years becoming a busy modern city with a rich medival heart. Explore the streets, restaurants and nightlife after relaxing in your hotel garden with a cup of Nepalise Tea in one hand and a tasty cake in the other.

Day 3Transfer from Kathmandu to Pokhara

Catch a flight or take an 8 hour drive to Pokhara from Kathmandu

Day 4Discover Pokhara

Spend a pre-trek night in Pokhara and take the day to explore the area.

Day 5Phedi to Tolka (5-6 hours)

Take a taxi or bus from Pokhara to Phedi for the first day of your trek. Starting at an elevation of 1130m, the trail climbs steeply for about 45 minutes before you follow a stone staircase and climb over a wall to a small temple. Here, a sign directs you to the steep uphill trail to Dhampus. Once you reach the top you are rewarded with great mountain views. Follow the dirt road through the village until you reach the check post where you will have to register your TIMS permit.

The trail then climbs through the rhododendron forest as you climb to Pothana where you can see an excellent view of Machhapuchhare, the ‘fishtail’ mountain. The trail then continues through Deorali and Bheri Kharka before descending to the head of the valley into Tolka.

Day 6Tolka to Chhomrong (5-6 hours)

The trail descends a long stone staircase to a suspension bridge across the Tigu Khola at 1720m thenc limbs through forests to meet a road. it’s then an easy walk past streams, fields and thatched stone buildings. You can see the Modi Khola far below and the houses of Jhinu Danda halfway up the hill far ahead. Make a long traverse to the school, cross the Ghora Khola on another bridge and you will arrive at the top of Landruk.

At the bottom of the village you will take the right path over a wooden bridge and past a hydroelectricity pipe towards a stunning waterfall. The jungle trail descends through ferns to fine views of Annapurna South. Another short walk leads across the bridge to Himal Qu before passing through villages Jhinu Danda and Taglung. From Taglung it is one final stretch to Chhomrong where there are several lodges to stay in.

Day 7Chhomrong to Bamboo (3-4 hours)

Leaving Chhomrong, the trail descends 150m on a stone staircase and crosses the Chhomrong Khola on a swaying suspension bridge at 1860m, then climbs out of the side valley via the tiny settlement of Tilche through forests of bamboo, rhododendron and oak. Climbing further on a rocky trail you will reach Sinuwa before passing through Kuldi where you can see the lodges of Bamboo and Doban below. Descend a long, steep stone staircase into a dense bamboo forest before arriving at Bamboo.

Day 8Bamboo to Himalayan Hotel (2-3 hours)

The trail climbs steeply through stands of bamboo, then through rhododendron forest up the side of the canyon. Keep an eye out for troops of black-faced langur monkeys! After traversing several avalanche chutes you’ll reach a small hydro plant and the stone paved trail of Doban.

Beyond Doban the trail crosses a stream and avalanche chute then climbs across a landslide. In the forest is a small temple which is worth a short visit. Afterwards, climb past a cascade over a rock platform and pass a trailside temple decorated with Shiva tridents and flowers. Twenty minutes later you’ll reach a deep gorge where you’ll stay the night at Himalayan Hotel.

Day 9Himalayan Hotel to Machhapuchhare Base Camp (3-4 hours)

From Himalayan Hotel its about 40 minutes through forests and up a steep ravine to Hinku Cave, named after the huge overhanging rock that used to house a small hotel. The trail crosses the remnants of a glacier just beyond Hinko then climbs through large boulders to Deorali. From here the trail diverts to the east side of the valley to Bagar before climbing across my avalanche paths through a sparse birch forest. Cross a moraine and descend to a stream which leads to the lower trail where you’ll eventually reach Machhapuchhare Base Camp. The mountain views here are exceptional.

Day 10Machhapuchhare Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp (1-2 hours)

The walk from Machhapuchhare Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp is pleasant and follows a stream before climbing to a few shepherds huts. Before long you can see the hotels of base camp which you’ll arrive at by following the trail sticking close to the foot of a large lateral moraine. There are incredible views of the near-vertical south face of Annapurna towering above the sanctuary towards northwest.

Day 11Annapurna Base Camp to Himalayan Hotel (4-5 hours)

Heading back down the valley is much easier. It is definitely worth taking the morning to explore the Base Camp a little more and you’ll still have plenty of time to reach the Himalayan Hotel again later that evening.

Day 12Himalayan Hotel to Chhomrong (5-7 hours)

Retrace your steps to Doban and back down to apple-pie country, making a long, steep climb back to the top of Chhomrong.

Day 13Chhomrong to Ghandruk (3-4 hours)

To reach Ghandruk from Chhomrong, return to the trail junction near the teashops at Taglung and climb to the top of a landslide before continuing down through forests and switchbacks. You will eventually pass through the village of Kimrong just above the Khumnu Khola. Next, cross the bridge and follow the steep trail through to Kumrong Danda before eventually taking the bridge over the Kyuri Khola which eventually forks into the Ghandruk trail.

Day 14Ghandruk to Birethanti (2-3 hours) then catch taxi to Pokhara

Today is your last day of trekking! You will leave Ghandruk and exit downhill through a steep stone staircase. The main trail to Birethanti leads ahead and south from here, dropping at first on a staircase then traversing high above the river on a wide stone trail. After around 2-3 hours of walking you will reach Birethanti where you can get a bus, jeep or taxi to Pokhara.

Day 15Transfer from Pokhara to Kathmandu

Travel from Pokhara to Kathmandu and then take the day to relax and celebrate your achievement with some drinks in one of the capital’s bars.

Day 16Fly back from Kathmandu to UK

Time to leave the kingdom of Nepal with a heavy heart and fly back to the UK
